Our Coaches

Gary “Hocus Pocus” Kopas’, love of boxing began in 1992. Instantly, he felt drawn to the raw grit and natural resiliency needed for the sport, he picked up the gloves at age 13 and has not put them down since. Under the wings of many great coaches, he has travelled Canada and internationally for boxing events between 1993-2020.

His most notable successes were:

Capturing gold in Grande Prairie at Canada 1995 Winter Games

  • 2017 CPBC Cruiserweight Title
  • 2017 International CPBC Cruiserweight Title
  • 9 time Provincial Champ
  • 1995 and 1997 NA Indigenous Games Gold Medalist
  • Repeat Golden Glove Titles
  • International and National Medals
  • National team member

His last bout was January 2020 in Mexico at the age of 40, which he first round tko’d his opponent, Deigo Martinez age 33

Boxing doesn’t come easy and it’s not a sport for quitters. It’s a combative sport that requires discipline, humility, self-control, strategy and motivation.

Gary attributes his winning style to the fact he fights with heart and to his never-give-up type of attitude!

This journey into boxing has challenged Gary on all levels personally.

Gary believes in learning how to face challenges head-on whether in the

ring or in everyday life.

With almost 30 years’ experience in the ring and over 150 fights under his belt he hopes to inspire, train and lead youth into a stronger tomorrow. Kopas’ goal is to help athletes, whether competitive or recreation, to appreciate the dedication, humility, hard work and determination it takes to be in this sport.

Gary recognizes he would not have gotten this far without the many great people in his life, from his wonderful family, coaches and friends who have supported him along the way. He hopes Kopas Boxing can build that same environment for other athletes looking to go further in life and needing a place to grow stronger physically and mentally.

Assistant Coach Catlin

Hard work and sacrifice is nothing new for this Red Seal Welder/ironworker turned Registered Massage Therapist and trained Manual Therapist.

As a versatile young man, coach Cat helps people deal with injuries every day, such as WCB, SGI and sports-related injuries. It is his job to understand body mechanics, how to improve an individual’s daily physical life and keep his clients strong and healthy.

Coaching has become a natural progression for him as he strives to be a master in his vocation and fulfill his passion for martial arts and boxing.

As a coach, he believes that patience, passion, and practice are core values in any combative sport training. His ambition is to help others see their maximum potential and assist them in reaching beyond their goals!

Personally, he strongly believes in striving to be your best and the importance of surrounding yourself with people who do the same,

as his favourite quote states: “Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.” (unknown)

Cat recognizes that martial arts, and now boxing, has not solely benefited him for fitness, strength and competitive purposes, but has prepared him for life.

“Life is amazing but can be unforgiving, and these combative sports teach you to push past obstacles and challenges to become better than you were yesterday.” Coach Cat.
